As children, most of us were told that eating our carrots would help improve our eyesight. The proof why our mums were “right”? Rabbits don’t wear eyeglasses. Although it may seem silly now, carrots do provide our eyes with the requisite nourishment to help maintain healthy vision.

 

The quality of our vision tends to wane as we get older. This is because our body requires more nutrients to help repair any wear and tear our eyes go through both on a daily basis and as the years go by. Fortunately, eating our way to healthy vision isn’t so difficult.

 

If you aren’t too fond of carrots though, you still have a wide range of food to choose from. In fact, an eye specialist may recommend that you eat more of the following food:

 

1. Cold-water Fish

 

Are you concerned about dry eyes? If so, you’ll want to drop by your local market and buy some fresh fish. Cold-water fish like salmon, tuna, or sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acid. This nutrient is known to help protect your eyes from dryness and macular degeneration. There is also some evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can also help protect you from developing cataracts.

 

2. Whole Grains

 

Too much refined carbohydrates in a diet has been linked to the progression of macular degeneration. Switching to a diet that consists of low glycaemic index (GI) food options can help you avoid this. Examples of such food are whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat bread. Additionally, these options are often rich in vitamin E and niacin, two vital nutrients for healthy eyes.

 

3. Legumes

 

If you’re looking for a good source of protein for your new diet, try adding more legumes like kidney beans and lentils. Not only are a great alternative source of protein, but they are also rich in bioflavonoids and zinc. These two nutrients help nourish and strengthen the retina, which may lower your risk of cataracts.

 

Of course, simply eating these food items regularly isn’t enough to guarantee healthy vision for life. It is highly advised that you drop by a respected vision centre, such as Eye Clinic London, for a comprehensive eye exam once every two years. Adults above the age of 61 are advised to see an eye doctor once a year to help detect eye problems, such as cataracts or glaucoma, early.
