How To Keep Your Eyes Safe When Using Eye Makeup

Many people wear eye makeup everyday but not having a good regime can cause infections and other eye problems. These simple easy tips will help keep your eyes healthy as well as looking good.

1. Used by date

It is best to get rid of eye makeup after it is three months old as bacteria can grow, especially in cream or liquid eye makeup, which can cause infections. If you do get an eye infection, whether it be from makeup or something else, make sure you get rid of all your eye makeup straight away, this is to avoid contaminating the makeup and reintroducing the infection into your eyes.

2. Allergies?

If you often get allergic to new products, then only add one new eye makeup item at a time. Once you have used it and have no reaction occurs, you can add another new eye makeup item, one at a time. This is the best way to avoid an allergic reaction as you will know what product has caused it. If you are allergic to a product avoid it in future and tell you eye doctor what ingredients it has so they can build up a good history of your allergic eyes. Also try not to use eye makeup products that contain harmful or untested ingredients.

3. Only use your own

Try not to let other people use your eye makeup and don’t use theirs either to avoid cross contamination. Also if you are in a shop trying on new eye makeup then only use new applicators to apply products and testers that have not be used by someone else. If you are concerned, the best option is to avoid using tester products in a shop completely.

4. A fresh start

Always make sure your eyelids and face are clean before applying any eye makeup. Apply eye makeup on the outside of the lash line away from the eye itself. You want to try and avoid obstructing the oil glands of both the lower and upper eyelid as these glands secrete the oil which protects the surface of the eye. Try not to put on eye makeup when in moving transportation as you could easily poke your eye which could cause injury and/or infection. Also when applying mascara never divide clumped lashes with sharp objects.

5. Dryness a problem?

Try to avoid glitter, power or other types of eye makeup that have flakes in if you suffer from dry eyes. These flakes can cause irritation and could get into the tear film. Glitter type eye makeup is one of the most common causes of corneal infection and/or irritations, more so for contact lenses wearers as the flakes could get under the contact lenses and cause injury.

6. Clean it off

Make sure you always remove all your eye makeup before you go to sleep. Use a makeup remover that does not irritate your eyes and gently rub a clean cotton bud/pad along the base of your eyelashes to make sure all make up is removed.

7. Eye surgery

If you have any eye surgery always follow your eye doctor’s advice with regards waiting a certain length of time before you start wearing eye makeup again and it is always best to then only use new eye makeup to avoid infections.
