5 Tips to keep your eyes healthyAs we get in to January we all want to get a bit fitter and eat a bit healthier but most people forget to look after one of the most important organs of all, our eyes. Here I will go through 5 simple ways you can keep your eyes healthy this new year.1. Have regular eye tests:It may seem the most obvious one, but many people fail to have their regular eye tests. Even if you don’t need glasses or have ‘perfect’ vision, everyone should have an eye test at least every 2 years. Some people who have certain diseases or conditions may need more frequent eye tests. Not only does having an eye test make sure your eyes are in a healthy way and provide you with glasses or contact lenses if needed, but they can also detect more serious problems such as brain tumours. So if you haven’t had an eye test recently why don’t get yourself booked in with your eye doctor and start the new year off with healthy eyes. The American Academy of ophthalmology recommends: “Adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease should receive a baseline comprehensive eye evaluation at age 40. Individuals without risk factors aged 40 to 54 should be examined by an ophthalmologist every 2 to 4 years. Individuals without risk factors aged 55 to 64 should be examined by an ophthalmologist every 1 to 3 years. Individuals without risk factors 65 years old or older should have an examination performed by an ophthalmologist every 1 to 2 years as the incidence of unrecognized ocular disease increases with age.”2. Healthy food = healthy eyesEating a healthy and varied diet it a must for keeping not just your eyes healthy but your entire body healthy. But why not try adding some of the following foods which promote healthy eyes:• Foods rich in beta-carotene such as carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato• Omega-3 fatty acids such as oily fish• Vitamin C such as berries, broccoli and citrus fruits• Vitamin E such as almonds, avocados and kiwifruit• Lutein such as kale, spinach, spring greens and eggs3. Protect your eyes like you would for your skin:Even though we are in winter it still gets sunny and you should protect your eyes against this. Wear 100% UVA and UVB protection sunglasses to help protect you from cataracts and macular degeneration which the UV light can contribute to.4. Give your eyes a rest:If you work in front of a computer or do a lot of close up work, you may find your eyes feel tired and strained. Eye specialists recommend doing to 20/20/20 rule; every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds and see if it helps.5. Keep your eyes moist:Especially when we work at a computer we don’t blink as much so eyes can become dry, for most people making a conscience effort blink more will help. If this doesn’t help you may need to start using artificial eye drops to help with dryness. If you are concerned you have dry eyes, speak to your eye doctor who can do a full assessment and give you the correct advice. Remember to blink!Well I hope these tips will help keep your eyes healthy in 2016!.fusion-widget-area-2 {padding:0px 0px 0px 0px;}.fusion-widget-area-2 .widget h4 {color:#252525;}.fusion-widget-area-2 .widget .heading h4 {color:#252525;} Search for: Recent Posts What Is Blepharitis?
