5 Top Tips For Tired Eyes: What You Need To Know

1. Sleep

Not getting enough sleep, or enough good quality sleep, can really affect your eyes. The average adult needs about 7-8 hours of good quality sleep.

Sleep deprived eyes can feel heavy, sore and irritated and can look red and dark circles can appear. If you suffer with this, try to go to bed at a good time and avoid using technology, such as mobile phones, televisions and other devices before you go to bed, as this can be a cause of bad quality sleep.

2. Work

Your eyes may feel tired during work especially if you use a computer for most of the day. Ways to help this is to try and use an anti-glare computer screen or getting an anti-glare computer screen cover. Also try to have regular breaks from the screen, do the 20-20-20 rule; look 20 feet away from your screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, this can really help combat tired eyes caused by using a computer. Also make sure you are sat at your desk correctly and have your screen at the right level so not to strain your eyes. And always remember to blink.

3. Hot or cold?

When their eyes are tired, some people use something cold to place over their eyes and others use something warm, both can help. Something cool over closed eyes in the morning is a nice way to awaken your eyes if they feel tired or if you have not had a great sleep. In the evening, it is nice to place something warm over closed eyelids, such as a heated eye mask, as this is a nice way to relax your eyes and is also a great way to help if you suffer with dry eyes.

4. Allergies

Having an allergy, such as hay fever, can really affect your eyes and make them feel tired, along with feeling sore and irritated. Try to avoid any known triggers that start off the allergic eye symptoms, speak to your GP or ophthalmologist who may be able to prescribe you antihistamines or eye drops to help the issue.

5. Eye exam

Make sure you have regular eye exams, roughly every two years for a healthy adult. Having the wrong prescription can really strain your eyes and make them feel tired all day. You may find that all you need is to get an updated pair of glasses with the correct prescription, and that can alleviate the tired feeling of your eyes.
