Children’s eye treatment: What is a squint and what is the squint treatment?
SAMER HAMADA DISCUSSES A SQUINT IN CHILDREN AND SPEAKS ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS
Squint means misalignment of the eyes. One eye might be turning in or out, or it could alternate – that means one time it’s the right eye turning in, the other time is the left eye turning in or out. It can affect any ages.
Usually, it’s a condition you see in children more than adults.
It is often treated with glasses to start with as this can fix the majority of squint cases…

Glasses might straighten up your child’s eyes
The first step in addressing a squint is by doing a full refraction test and giving the child or patient a glasses prescription to allow the eye to develop well and the eye to be straightened up. If this doesn’t work, then the other option would be surgery. Surgery is normally indicated when the eyes are still turning in or out despite wearing glasses.
Surgery can fine-tune the results
I saw one child last week, who had been wearing glasses for six months. We managed to get his squint reduced quite a lot, but there was still a bit of degree which was not cosmetically acceptable by the parents. They wanted more options, so surgery was the next option. After surgery, the eyes are aligned nicely now with no squint seen anymore.
