How To Protect Ageing Eyes Through Nutrition And Lifestyle

Making small changes in your nutrition, diet and lifestyle could help slow down or avoid certain age related eye diseases such as cataracts and age related macular degeneration (AMD).

There are certain lifestyle habits which you can change to help protect your eyes, this can include stopping smoking, avoiding strong UV light and wearing sunglasses when in the sun as this can start the development of cataracts, and also to make sure you have regular eye examinations by an optometrist or eye doctor. Eye examinations can help pick up early signs of eye diseases so this is a must.
Nutrition and diet is very important when looking after aging eyes.

You should try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables to help keep your eyes protected and healthy. Foods high in lutein and zeaxanthin are especially good at protecting the retina from changes caused by UV light. Peas, spinach and kale are some of the many foods high in lutein and zeaxanthin. Dark green fruits and vegetables and those that are brightly coloured, have plenty of antioxidants which help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of free radicals. These free radicals can cause eye diseases. Vitamin C and A are also highly important for general healthy vision.

Diets that are high in saturated fat and lots of sugar can make your risk of developing eye diseases much higher. It has been showed that diabetes, heart disease, age related macular degeneration and other eye conditions such as cataracts, happen less often in people who have a healthy diet and take in the correct nutrition.
So for some small lifestyle, diet and nutritional changes you can slow down the natural aging process of the eyes and help prevent possible age related eye diseases.
