Samer Hamada has performed the first UK bladeless corneal transplantation in children
While corneal grafts being performed with lasers in adults has been done for years, this has not, until now, been done in children.
Mr Hamada has been the first surgeon in the UK to carry out a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) partial thickness corneal transplantation using the latest femtosecond laser on a child.
Usually during a DALK corneal transplant a blade is used to cut the layers of tissue that are to be removed from the patient before donor tissue replaces it. By using the femtosecond laser to create this cut means it is more precise, as the thickness of the tissue being removed is only 0.45mm.
Mr Hamada is quoted as saying
‘Really pleased and excited that I have performed the first UK deep partial thickness corneal graft in a child using the latest femtosecond laser. Nothing more rewarding than restoring the gift of sight’.
